According to HOTELS Magazine, by the end of 2025, H World Group’s Ji Hotel had 404,600 rooms in operation, marking the first time that Chinese hotel brands have simultaneously held the top two spots on the ranking.
Chinese hotel groups have already proven they can build businesses at a truly global scale. The harder question now is whether the playbook that worked in China can be replicated in other markets around the world.
The growth of Ji Hotel and Hanting starts with the depth of the Chinese market itself.
China is home to one of the world’s largest accommodation markets, supported by a mature franchise system, well-developed supply chains, and extensive digital infrastructure.
At the end of 2025, H World had 12,858 hotels and 1.264 million rooms, with approximately 93% run under managed or franchised models.
This asset-light model keeps capital requirements low, letting the group scale by lending its brands, systems, and operational know-how to franchisees.
China has also developed a uniquely mature environment for hotel growth.
OTAs provide access to demand, mobile payments cut transaction costs, centralized procurement sharpens supply-chain efficiency, and an established franchise network helps brands enter new cities rapidly.
Once a model is proven, it can be replicated fast across the existing ecosystem— a key reason Chinese hotel groups have reached global scale.
Chinese hotel groups have shown that they can turn complex operational challenges into standardized solutions. True globalization, however, is not about exporting the domestic answer unchanged. It is about building a system that can find new answers in different markets.
Going forward, a different set of metrics may be needed to measure the global competitiveness of Chinese hotel groups.
How many overseas projects are invested in or owned by local owners without Chinese capital backgrounds? How many room nights come from local consumers? How many hotels can remain competitive without relying on Chinese travelers? And how many owners can achieve sustained and verifiable returns on investment?
For hotel asset owners, the final choice is not a brand story, but a proven track record of operating results.
