China expects 520 million winter tourist visits in 2024-2025 season

China plans to promote inbound tourism with targeted campaigns for visitors from South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

The China Tourism Academy recently released the "China Winter Tourism Development Report (2025)" at the 2025 Ice and Snow Tourism Development Conference. The report projects that, fueled by favorable policies, rising demand, and innovative supply models, the 2024-2025 ice and snow season will attract 520 million visits, with winter leisure and sports tourism revenues expected to exceed USD 86.13 billion.

According to Douyin data, the number of group-buying orders for Harbin Ice and Snow World on Douyin increased by 459% year-over-year in December 2024. The Douyin Winter Hot Springs Season, running from October 22 to December 22, 2024, generated over 3.6 billion topic views, boosting sales of winter-related products by more than USD 2.73 billion.

The latest survey conducted by China Tourism Academy’s winter tourism research team highlights that:

* 71.2% of respondents wish to experience winter leisure and sports tourism activities during the 2024-2025 season.

* 53.4% of them plan to increase trip frequency.

* 45.5% aim to explore long-distance winter destinations.

* 64.2% expect to maintain or increase their expenditure from previous seasons.

These figures mark record highs, with traveling with friends being the most preferred mode, followed by family trips.

The report recommends:

* Developing world-class winter destinations, premium travel routes, and iconic scenic spots.

* Enhancing efforts to promote inbound winter tourism, with tailored campaigns for South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia markets.
