In response to a recent initiative led by Chinese authorities to regulate online platform algorithms, Meituan has announced plans to implement eight key measures aimed at improving and disclosing its algorithmic pratices:
1. To promote routine algorithm transparency, Meituan will establish a dedicated disclosure section to foster ongoing communication with stakeholders about the core principles and operational mechanisms behind its algorithms.
2. To establish a diverse and open communication mechanism, Meituan will host quarterly algorithm roundtable discussions, inviting delivery riders, merchants, users, and academic experts. These sessions will gather broad feedback, disclose improvement outcomes, and ensure that algorithmic decisions balance the interests of all participants.
3. To enhance rider fatigue prevention mechanism, Meituan has launched pilot fatigue prevention programs in regions like eastern China, aiming to mitigate issues related to overlong delivery shifts.
4. To reform rider incentive structures, Meituan plans to phase out penalties for late deliveries, transitioning from punitive measures to positive incentives. New initiatives, including training programs and a points-based system, will replace current model, fostering a more rewarding environment for riders.
5. To strengthen safety and behavioral guidlines for riders, Meituan will enforce stricter compliance with traffic regulations through measures such as mandatory helmet checks, pop-up safety alerts, and order acceptance restrictions for non-compliance. These steps aim to ensure safer delivery practices.
6. Meituan vows to increase research and development investments for delivery safety, identifying road infrastructure, natural obstacles, and complex delivery environments to enhance overall rider safety during deliveries.
7. To improve rider workflow and experience, Meituan will refine delivery address accuracy, prioritize recommending convenient drop-off points, and address issues like false meal readiness notifications and malicious complaints. These initiatives are designed to smooth the delivery process from pick-up to hand-off.
8. To address ecosystem-wide pain points, Meituan will proactively collaborate with all partners to resolve conflicts and frictions faced by riders, merchants, and users. The company aims to foster stronger, more cooperative relationships across its platform.
