The C919’s entry into service with these flagship carriers is also expected to ramp up competition in the domestic market.

China’s aviation landscape is on the verge of a significant shift as two of the country’s largest airlines, Air China and China Southern Airlines, prepare to receive their first COMAC C919 aircraft.  These deliveries are expected to occur by the end of August 2024, following the successful completion of flight tests earlier this month.

Both airlines have placed substantial orders, with each company securing 100 units of the C919.  These orders are part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign-made aircraft and bolster China’s domestic aviation capabilities.

While the C919 is currently certified only for operations within China, its deployment by major airlines such as Air China and China Southern is a critical step towards establishing the aircraft as a viable alternative in the global market.
