US HOTELS magazine, an authoritative media of the global hotel industry, published the latest "2016 Top 325 Global Hotel Groups". The top seven hotel groups have kept the same ranking as in the previous year, and Marriott continued to rank No.1. As for China’s hotels, Jinjiang Hotel Group was ranked the highest at No.5, whereas BTG HomeInns rose to No.8 after the merger and China Lodging climbed to the 9th place.
As the official journal of the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IHRA), HOTELS is one of the most notable publications for the hospitality industry worldwide, which lends authority to its annual global hotel ranking. The ranking is compiled based on operation scale and expansion, room numbers and hotel portfolio size. The ranking covers only hotel management companies but not property owners or real estate investors.
The top three hotel groups on the list are Marriott International, Hilton and InterContinental Hotels Group. Significantly, the newly combined Marriott-Starwood entity is the first to surpass 1 million guest rooms in the history of HOTELS’ annual ranking.
It is worth noting that a number of hotel groups in China previously not in the global ranking have made their way into the 2016 list. Among the top 25 hotel brands, there are eight hotel groups from China.
