China Eastern accelerates international expansion in bid for a turnaround

China’s civil aviation industry is transitioning from recovery-driven growth to a phase of high-quality development.

China Eastern Airlines has recently unveiled an ambitious upgrade of its international route network for 2026.

From a new direct flight between Shanghai and Tashkent in Central Asia, to a Xi’an–Vienna link connecting China with Europe, along with frequency increases across Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Europe, the airline is rolling out wave after wave of new and restored services—rapidly expanding its global network.

As competition in China’s domestic market becomes increasingly saturated while international travel demand continues to recover, China Eastern’s aggressive international push raises a key question: is the airline positioning itself for the next phase of growth, or taking a bold risk?

In the international market, China Eastern’s capacity in 2025 recovered to 112.9% of 2019 levels, while passenger traffic (RPK) reached 117.5% of pre-pandemic levels. The international load factor stood at 83.2%, 3.2 percentage points higher than before the pandemic, reflecting strong performance from newly launched destinations in Europe and South Asia.

Looking at the airline’s strategy, the approach is clear: fill network gaps, strengthen trunk routes and tap emerging markets—while coordinating multiple hub airports.

Starting in March this year, three new routes—Shanghai Pudong–Tashkent, Xi’an–Vienna and Shanghai Pudong–Adelaide—will launch in succession. Additional destinations such as Mumbai, Dublin and Ulaanbaatar are also in the pipeline, gradually filling network gaps along the Belt and Road corridors, Europe and the Australia–New Zealand markets.

For mature routes such as London, Frankfurt and Sydney, the airline plans to increase flight frequencies, strengthening key trunk routes and offering travelers more convenient schedules.

Notably, this round of expansion is no longer driven solely by the Shanghai hub. Xi’an is emerging as a new China–Europe gateway, while Kunming is reviving South Asia connections. The coordinated development of multiple regional hubs is expected to make China Eastern’s international network more resilient.
