One-person travelers” now account for 22% of all Chinese tourists.

Chinese tourists enjoying solo travel in Japan are on the rise. Between April and June 2025, such travelers accounted for nearly a quarter of all Chinese visitors to Japan, with women making up the majority. Beyond Japan’s safety and cleanliness, the ease of planning trips via social media has further fueled the popularity of solo trips.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency’s Consumption Trend Survey of Inbound Tourists, 23.1% of Chinese visitors said they traveled to Japan alone during April-June 2025, up from 22.0% in January-March. Women accounted for more than 60% of these travelers. Traditional group tours are fading, and now about 90% of Chinese visitors arrange their own itineraries.

Their smartphones are filled with social media content. On Xiaohongshu, posts tagged “#SoloTravelinJapan” abound, while the speed-run “special forces travel” style—packing many sights into a short trip—has also gained traction.

Japanticket, a Tokyo-based travel planning company, reported that in August, “solo travelers” made up 22% of Chinese bookings. Sushi restaurants and the Chiikawa Bakery in Harajuku, Tokyo, are particularly popular stops.
