According to data released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) on August 20, the number of visitors to Japan in July reached 3.437 million, up 4.4% from the same month last year. Fueled by an increase in travelers from mainland China, the monthly total hit an all-time high.
With the start of the summer school holiday, visitors from mainland China, Indonesia, India, the United States, and France all increased. Boosted by new routes and added flight capacity, arrivals from Taiwan also set a monthly record.
By country and region, mainland China contributed the largest share, with 974,500 visitors.
From January to July, travelers from mainland China accounted for 23% of Japan’s total inbound visitors. While this share remains below the pre-pandemic level in 2019 (30%) and shows a more diversified trend, it is still higher than in 2024 (19%).
For the first seven months of 2025, total inbound visitors to Japan reached 24.955 million, an 18.4% increase year on year. If this momentum continues, Japan’s annual inbound visitors in 2025 are expected to surpass 40 million.
