China has nabbed some of the biggest awards at an event known as the Oscars of the travel world-World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia

Singapore Airlines, the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong and China as a destination have nabbed some of the biggest awards at an event known as the Oscars of the travel world.

Some of the biggest industry players gathered at a red carpet event at The Oberoi hotel in New Delhi on Friday for the World Travel Awards Asia & Australasia, a trade event that aims to toast those that are “pushing the boundaries of industry excellence.”

Singapore Airlines stole the coveted title of Asia’s leading airline from Malaysia Airlines, which is trying to rebuild itself after the mysterious disappearance of Flight 370 earlier this year.

Since 2009, Malaysia Airlines has held the title four times, alternating with Singapore Airlines for the award in the last few years.

In the category of Asia’s leading hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong broke India’s Trident Gurgaon hotel’s five-year winning streak to take home the title this year. The hotel also nabbed the regional title of Hong Kong’s leading hotel suite for 2014.

The Oberoi, New Delhi was named Asia’s leading luxury hotel.

China also emerged a big winner that night, named Asia’s leading destination. Its most famous landmark, the Great Wall of China, was likewise tipped as Asia’s leading tourist attraction, beating a host of other world famous and historically significant sites including the Taj Mahal and the Angkor Wat temples.

And, impressively, for the ninth year in a row, Singapore's Changi Airport has kept its iron hold on the title of Asia's leading airport.

The next regional awards will take place in Anguilla, October 25, for the Caribbean and North America.
