Trang is Asia’s cheapest airport, Beijing’s the busiest

Thailand and Malaysia are home to the cheapest airports in Asia, according to a study by flight search engine,WhichAirline.com, with the former having three and the latter four.

Topping the list as the cheapest is Trang in  Thailand, based on the cost of flights from the airport at an average of US$0.0487 per kilometre.

Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia, comes in second with US$0.04923. It is followed by Tiruchirappalli, India (US$0.0499), Bandung, Indonesia (US$0.0508), with Tawau (Sabah), Malaysia (US$$0.0525) making up the top five cheapest airports in the region .

While these cheap airports with low cost airlines drag the prices down, they are however not the busiest, said the report.

The busiest airport in Asia is Beijing Capital, China, followed by Tokyo Haneda (Japan), Hong Kong, Jakarta (Indonesia), and Dubai (United Arab Emirates) making up the five with the most traffic.

States the report, “The cheapest flights can be found at Kuala Lumpur airport that has average price US$0.064 per kilometre followed by Jakarta with US$0.0671 and Guangzhou with US$0.0798.

Another three airports offer price under US$0.1, namely Shanghai (US$0.0811), Singapore (US$0.0826) and Hong Kong (US$0.0854).

Dubai Airport ranked 7th with US$0.1074, followed by Beijing with US$0.1314.

Bangkok with US$0.1974 and Tokyo Haneda with US$0.2032 are the most expensive out of Asa’s 10 busiest airports.

• WhichAirline.com compared prices from all airports in Europe, using average price per 1 kilometre of flight for air tickets available for purchase in the following months. Air ticket prices are taken from the WhichAirline database. The average ticket price per km was used as a way to compare the overall price levels.
