The number of bookings for Macao hotels through the Trip.com’s Ctrip platform had doubled compared to the same period in 2019.

Macao, the Chinese gaming and resort mecca that has been hurt by travel limitations during the Covid-19 pandemic, looks poised for recovery, according to a survey released Tuesday by the country’s online travel leader Trip.com.

As of April 8, the number of bookings for Macao travel “products” during the upcoming May Day holidays increased by 20% percent compared to 2019, Trip.com said. The number of bookings for Macao hotels through the Trip.com’s Ctrip platform had doubled compared to the same period in 2019, and cost of economy-class air tickets in and out of Macao was 50% higher on the average than the beginning of the month.

Macao is currently the only outbound destination where mainland Chinese residents are not required to perform a 14-day quarantine on arrival and on their return, Trip.com noted. With no reported cases in Macao for over a year, travelers must hold a valid negative COIVD-19 test taken within the last seven days upon arrival and follow local safety and virus control measures.

“The continuing rise in popularity among mainland Chinese travellers for destinations such as Macao further evidences the vast amount of pent-up travel demand that exists,” Trip.com said.
