Japan to begin talks with China and Brunei on easing travel curbs

Only 1,700 foreign travelers are estimated to have arrived in May.

Japan could begin talks with China’s Taiwan and Brunei as early as this month on easing coronavirus-induced travel restrictions, diplomatic sources said Wednesday.

China’s mainland and South Korea are also under consideration, though concerns remain over letting in a large number of foreign travelers due to Japan’s limited virus testing capacity, the sources said. Business travelers are expected to be given priority followed by students and then tourists.

Travel to and from Japan has virtually stopped since an entry ban was imposed on areas that have seen a rise in infections, dealing a blow to the world’s third-largest economy.

Only 1,700 foreign travelers are estimated to have arrived in May, the fewest for any month on record and a 99.9 percent drop from a year earlier, according to government data.

A total of 129 countries and regions are currently on the entry ban list, with foreign travelers who have been to any of the areas within 14 days being turned away. Taiwan and Brunei were added April 3.

China and South Korea pose a greater challenge due to a much larger number of potential travelers. Japan is scrambling to increase the number of polymerase chain reaction tests it can administer daily.
